What is it?

The neck lift is a process where we address the sagging neck and a double chin, which can be a consequence of massive weight loss or ageing.

Where is the problem?

There is :

  1. Excess skin
  2. Lose muscles (neck muscles , we call it plastysma)
  3. Extra fat under the skin

How do we do it?

  1. liposuction of the neck fat: but this does not always address the sagging skin and the underlying loose muscles
  2. So muscle repair is needed: check below
neck lift and neck contouring
Through an incision under the chin the anterior neck muscles are tightened
Neck lift and neck contouring incisions
Through an incision under the ear, the neck muscles on the sides are addressed

Where do you get cuts?

On the side under the ear and under the chin, but you can rest assured that these cuts wont give you bad scars are will be barely visible.

How does the patient look after surgery?

The above patient had only extra skin and the job was easy.

Post-surgery care?

Down time: 3 weeks of rest ( I ask for 3 weeks yes, some may ask for 2 weeks only)

Use of compression : in form of garments for a month (kind of chin/neck strap)

Compression with sutures: you may expect a fish net-like suturing on the skin for the first 3 days. Don’t worry, they don’t leave scars

What are the dangers of this surgery?

A delayed wound healing may trouble some of you if you are a chronic smoker. diabetic, and have autoimmune diseases.

Hypertrophic scarring may occur over the incision sites if you are prone to keloids and hypertrophic scarring.

Excess bleeding: if you are taking aspirin/clopidogrel. This may lead to hematoma ( clots under the skin) and will trouble my sleep and yours too. But the good part is, it can be promptly managed if noticed early.

Stop smoking:

If you are planning to get this surgery done, please stop smoking, for God’s sake.
